Nuclear Plant Life Extension (PLEX): Study vs Reality

by Giovanni Mini

Head of Engineering at Ansaldo Nucleare

Sommario:

Summary:

The seminar is mainly focused on the on-going Plant Life EXtension (PLEX) of the existing Nuclear Power Plant at Embalse in Argentina, being shortly completed, also with the large contribution of Ansaldo Nucleare.

This overview of the main technical aspects of the PLEX, will be the starting point to think over the differences between what usually is studied and what any engineer has to deal with along the daily job.

In particular we will focus on two subjects: 1) the main characteristics of equipment, such as weights and dimensions, of which we are not fully aware during the study, and sometimes during the design before getting a direct view of them on site and 2) the refurbishment of existing structures/systems to adapt them to the current design requirements and the difficulty that such adaptation  involves, most of the time greater than designing from scratch.
