The launch of the BepiColombo space mission and the exploration of Mercury

Pierre HENRI & Luca BUCCIANTINI

LPC2E, CNRS, Orléans, France

BepiColombo is a joint mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), dedicated to the exploration of Mercury, the innermost and least explored terrestrial planet in our Solar System. The BepiColombo mission comprises three spacecraft: the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM, ESA), the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO, ESA) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO, JAXA), that will have been launched together end of October from Kourou, French Guyana. To celebrate the launch of BepiColombo, as the spacecraft start their seven-year journey towards Mercury, we will give an overview of this exciting space mission and present its various science objectives. The overview will be followed by a description of the activities taking place at the CNRS French space research laboratory LPC2E to prepare the operation and data analysis of our instrument onboard BepiColombo, based on the expertise developed these last years with the ESA Rosetta cometary mission.

This seminar is organized in the frame of the activites of the Masters of Science in Space Engineering - Corso di studi in Ingegneria Aerospaziale.
